everyone's favorite cordwainer!

From Florio's 1611 Italian/English dictionary:

Zocco - a log, a blocke, a stocke, a stump, a snag or shive of wood.
Zoccoli - woodden pattins, startops, galashes or chopinos, so called because they are made of a Zocco.
Zoccolaro - a maker of startops, galoshes or wooden pattins.

Amongst the many things I do, I make zoccoli, also called chopines in English. I've done a good amount of research on the topic, and you can see works in progress as well as my research at http://aands.org/raisedheels. I'm a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, where I'm known as Vyncent atte Wodegate. I really enjoy historical costume and cordwaining (shoemaking), and I make all manner of historical shoes and boots from the dark ages to the 18th Century. I don't actually sell my shoes, but if you'd like to barter for a pair, drop me a note! =)

By the way, this journal is pretty much friends only, which is why you probably only see one post =)
